The legend of Francavilla
Once upon a time a Princess named Giovanna lived in a castle, in the town of Chiaromonte, with her husband and her son.
Everyday she appeared at the window and admired a wonderful view : a green valley with a little pleasant hill at the foot of the mount Caramola just on the bank of the lovely river Sinni and, further on that, the monastery of Saint Nicholas where some Carthusian monks lived.
One day her only son fell ill seriously. Many doctors and herbalists arrived to the castle, but nobody could find the medicine capable to recover him.
Then the princess, desperate, addressed a pray to Saint Nicholas , promising , in change of her son’s recovering, to give all the valley she saw from her castle window as a gift to the monks.
The son recovered and the princess kept a promise.
The monks built on the lands presented by the princess, on that little hill situated on the river Sinni, a little village to accommodate all the people, coming from the neighbouring villages,that cultivated the soils and the woods extending till next to the monastery.They didn't pay any taxes and so the village was named “Villa Franca”, that meant free-tax land and then it was turned in “Francavilla”. Later they added "In Sinni" that is on the river Sinni.

La leggenda di Francavilla
Tanto tempo fa viveva in un castello, nel paese di Chiaromonte, una principessa dal nome Giovanna insieme a suo marito e suo figlio.
Tutti i giorni si affacciava dalla finestra e ammirava un bellissimo paesaggio : una verde vallata con una piccola ridente collina ai piedi del monte Caramola proprio sulla sponda del bellissimo fiume Sinni e, più in là, il convento di S. Nicola abitato da alcuni monaci Certosini.
Un giorno il suo unico figlio si ammalò gravemente. Giunsero al castello molti medici ed erboristi, ma nessuno riuscì a trovare una medicina in grado di guarirlo.
Allora la principessa, disperata, si rivolse in preghiera a S. Nicola, promettendo, in cambio della guarigione di suo figlio, di offrire in dono ai monaci tutta la vallata che vedeva dalla finestra del suo castello.
Il figlio guarì e la principessa mantenne la promessa.
I monaci costruirono nelle terre regalate dalla principessa, su quella piccola collina posta sul fiume Sinni, un piccolo villaggio per alloggiare tutte le persone, provenienti dai paesi vicini, che lavoravano le terre e i boschi che si estendevano fin vicino al convento. Essi non pagavano alcuna tassa ed Il villaggio prese, perciò, il nome di “Villa Franca”, che significava terra libera dalle tasse, e questo venne poi cambiato in “Francavilla”. In seguito venne aggiunto "in Sinni" cioè sopra il fiume Sinni.
